Keep in mind that, all of the following is purely guesswork and has no basis or ties to anything that is George Lucas, Lucasfilm Ltd., Steven Spielberg or Mr. Harrison Ford.
With the legal issues over and done with; here goes nothing:
My own ponderings began after visiting a website called Supershadownet.com, a couple of years ago - already then extensive writings on the 3 future Star Wars movies, that have never existed beyond George Lucas' thoughts and the comic books licensed back in the 90s.
Only redeeming quality would be postings of recent quotes from the Indy
camp, since the release of 'Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' in 2008. But
those are later additions.
They DID however have an idea for a geographical location for the opening scene in Indiana Jones part 5, that I like. Still; to me the overal plot sounded too similar to the original Raiders of the Lost Ark.
What it did do was kickstart my imagination and is still worth checking out, if not for anything else, it's a very good laugh.
My initial thought when the recent Bermuda Triangle idea was debunked via twitter, was that Indy needed to go somewhere he'd never been before - in terms of enviroment and if not underwater, then what's left to do?
..Snow!?
The idea of Henry Jones Jr. running around in the 1960's to me sounds a bit too modern to work without seeming out of place. And with the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull set in 1957, I kept with the height of the cold war thought.
Concerning Harrison's age it also seemed plausible to not be too many years after KOTS. Possibly meaning more soviets and the ever looming red scare.
But the film also needs some kind of supernatural or religious tie, steeped in mystery and/or going back as far as nodoby can remember.
Here's a teaser for you: Something very strange indeed happened in the year of our Lord 1908.. Puzzled?

It would need to both seem other-worldly; BUT at the same time,
apparently have no scientific explanation whatsoever? I was at a loss
and could not remember anything Joseph Cambell had written on russian
mythology.
Keywords being: Snow, 1950's, cold war, russians and
superstition.. But there was still alot missing for this to fit the bill.
Nuked fridges and dimension hopping saucer-men (from mars?) was seen in
Indy's last outing. So where to possibly go from there?
In keeping with the traditions of the Indiana Jones series, George Lucas
borrows from (at the time) current events or beliefs and puts his
MacGuffin in to twist history into yet another adventure, for Indy and
fans to have. So what exactly went on back in the 1950's:

4th, 1957 Was the day when Soviet Russia
launched their
first Sputnik satelite into orbit. It's lauch vehicle initailly being
designed to carry nuclear warheads, Sputnik
means co-traveller in russian.
November 7th, 1957 The Gaither report calls for more missilies and fall-out shelters across the United States.
It's a fair bet to state that the Arms race was on as never before. But everybody knew that already, right?
KOTS established that indy had been spying on the 'reds' for years.
Maybe not a bad idea to send Indana in, if strange reports of
superweapons were coming out from behind the iron curtain.
But now, I tread cautiosly, so that this does not entirely come off as being just another nerd with a lively imagination. Hear me out for a sec ...
I am well aware, that Atomic bombs are not anything "special" - and certainly not magical either. So why make Indy don his fedora and whip, to swing into action yet again?
With a sigh of dispair, I took to youtube, as a last resort. Having already somewhat given up in the research fase of this blog-entry; and then suddenly it struck me!
'You ever hear of the Tunguska Event?
If not, I am sure you're not the only one online. So here's a History Channel snippet I found on Youtube.com, to quickly bring you up to speed:
Wikipedia tells that the explosion that took place on july 30th 1908, was first investigated by soviet scientists in 1921.
If there were earlier expeditions or evidence thereof, they are most likely to have gone missing during the turbulent years in between World War I, the Russian Revolution of 1917 and following Russian Civil war.
As stated in the above video, the natives of the Tunguska region were hesitant to guide the expeditioners of 1921 into the area, because they were highly superstitious and certain that their god Agdi (possibly Audi) had destroyed every living creature and torn down all vegetation; as he was angry at mans wretched behaviour.
The youtube video goes on to tell us, that the head of Soviet Secret Police sent another expedition to Tunguska in the late 1940's. But no reports or findings of any sort, are known to exist. Many theories are mentioned on Wikipedia. Go check 'em out for yourself and believe what you will. As with Indy's previous endeavours; they only need to be rooted in some bit of reality.
Then Mr. Spielberg and Lucas takes it from there. And makes it their own, entirely.
To me, Comrade Stalin could send Irina Spalko's successor on a similar
mission, however (maybe too) close to the previous film's narrative? This is only speculation after all.
But then again, two out of three earlier Indy romps DID have nazi's in them. So who knows for sure, really. Only time will tell. If but some of this turns out to be the real deal; you read it here first folks - way in advance of any official statement or teaser-image(s), whatsoever.
I am sure that both Spielberg and Lucas loves all the speculation and in the end,
if I am all wrong about the above - at the very least my efforts
have been food for thought. And you dear reader maybe learned something
new.
One thing is certain:
If adventure has a name, it must be Indiana Jones!
I am positive he's not going to sit in his wheelchair (as pictured here), sporting a nice and flowery hawaiian shirt; enjoying himself in his twillight years; while John William's Raiders march slowly fades in and they start rolling the film's end credits..
Though Dr. Jones could EVEN make that look good, don't ya think?!
However, in the past Lucas and Spielberg are known to have met there, while waiting for ticket-sale-estimates to roll in from their movies and Indiana Jones was originally invented, while the pair were on the beach in the island paradice.
So to them, it might be an awesome inside joke. While moviegoers would boo and hiss it off as being cheesy or not an iconic enough ending, as compared to riding into the sunset in The Last Crusade.
But the two of them would just chuckle, look at how much money they made on part five and dream of the subsequent dvd-sales and merch being moved. They can do as they please. Even if it makes for a worse film.
Search your feelings. You know it to be true.
